Multinational Corporation Involvement in the Human Trafficking IssueMultinational Corporations (MNCs) are corporations that have their facilities and other assets in at least one other country other than their home country. The importance of MNCs in the fight against human trafficking is the fact that a large amount of trafficking victims are migrant workers who are trying to find a better job and life away from the one they were living. Many of these people see an opportunity to work in a different country and take it without putting much thought into it. Sometimes those job opportunities are real and they get a good wage paying job. Other times it is a scam and companies take advantage of these people and force them to work for little or no pay. Sometimes, it is a fraud job agency and the victims are sold as labor trafficking victims or sold into the sex trafficking industry. With the help of MNCs, much of this can be stopped. They can ensure that their factories, shops, and businesses are all held to a specified high standard and guarantee they are not in any way involved in human trafficking. If each individual MNC makes strides toward combating human trafficking, the effects could be astounding.
For the past three years the "World's Best Multinational Workplace List" has been put together by the research firm Great Place to Work to commend those corporations that have excellent workplace culture. The top ten corporations for 2013, in order, were Google, SAS Institute, NetApp, Microsoft, W. L. Gore & Associates, Kimberly Clark, Marriott, Diageo, National Instruments, and Cisco. Four of these companies (NetApp, Microsoft, Kimberly Clark, and Cisco) are supply chain companies who have posted their statements on human trafficking in accordance with the SB-657 requirements through KnowTheChain. Below are nine of the top ten corporations and their involvement in the human trafficking issue.
